FIA Enforces Strict Penalties for New Monaco Grand Prix Tyre Rule

In a decisive move to reinvigorate the racing spectacle at Formula 1’s most prestigious street circuit, the FIA has confirmed that failure to comply with a newly introduced tyre regulation at the Monaco Grand Prix will result in disqualification.

Approved by the World Motor Sport Council, the updated Sporting Regulations specifically Article 30.5 m)—now require all drivers to make two compulsory pit stops during the 2025 Monaco GP. The change is aimed at increasing strategic variety and creating more opportunities for overtaking on a circuit notoriously difficult for passing.

“This rule is mandatory,” an FIA representative stated. “Any driver who fails to complete both required pit stops will be disqualified from the final classification.”

Traditionally, teams at Monaco have relied on one-stop strategies due to the low tyre degradation and the importance of track position. However, starting next year, that approach will no longer be permitted. Teams will need to rethink their tactics, adding an extra layer of complexity and potentially shaking up the running order.

The decision comes on the heels of the unpredictable 2024 race, where Lewis Hamilton crashed out in a dramatic battle at the front, and both McLaren and Red Bull were unexpectedly off the pace. With the racing already showing signs of increased unpredictability, the FIA appears ready to capitalize on that momentum by mandating strategic diversity.

By enforcing this rule with the threat of disqualification, the FIA is sending a clear message: all teams must follow the updated regulations to the letter. The aim is to inject new energy into the Monaco Grand Prix while preserving its historic charm—ensuring that strategy, not just grid position, plays a decisive role in the outcome.
