FIA confirms Sanctions McLaren Lando Norris After I…read more.
Lando Norris has received a penalty from the FIA following a miscalculated move that led to a collision during the Spanish Grand Prix. The incident happened on lap 38 when the McLaren driver tried to overtake George Russell of Mercedes at Turn 10.
Norris braked too late and tapped the rear of Russell’s car, forcing both drivers off the track. Russell managed to continue with minor damage, but Norris’s front wing was damaged, hampering his race pace significantly.
After reviewing the situation, race stewards found Norris largely responsible and gave him a 10-second time penalty, along with two penalty points on his super license.
Speaking after the race, Norris acknowledged his error. “I got a bit too eager and went for a move that wasn’t really on. I own that mistake—it cost us,” he admitted.
McLaren team boss Andrea Stella defended Norris’s racing instincts but pointed out the need for better judgment. “We encourage our drivers to take opportunities, but there’s a balance. Today, that balance wasn’t there,” Stella said.
As a result of the penalty, Norris slipped from sixth to ninth in the final classification, causing McLaren to lose important points in the Constructors’ Championship. The team now shifts focus to the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix, hoping for a stronger showing.
