FIA Enforces Penalty to Lando Norris After Embarrassing C…read more.
Lando Norris has been penalized by the FIA following a costly incident during the Spanish Grand Prix that resulted in a clumsy collision on lap 38. The McLaren driver attempted a bold overtake on George Russell of Mercedes heading into Turn 10 but misjudged his braking and made contact with the rear of Russell’s car.
Both drivers veered off track as a result. While Russell rejoined the race with minimal damage, Norris suffered front wing damage that severely impacted his pace for the remainder of the race.
After a thorough investigation, race stewards concluded that Norris was predominantly at fault. The FIA imposed a 10-second time penalty and added two penalty points to his super license.
Speaking after the race, Norris accepted responsibility, calling the attempt “too optimistic.” “I saw a chance and went for it, but it wasn’t the right decision. I take the blame—I let the team down,” he said.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella supported Norris’s aggressive style but emphasized the need for smarter decisions. “We appreciate ambition, but there’s a fine line between bold and reckless. Today, that line was crossed,” he remarked.
The penalty dropped Norris from sixth to ninth in the final standings, costing McLaren crucial points in the Constructors’ Championship. The team now turns its focus to the Canadian Grand Prix, looking to recover from the setback.
