BREAKING: FIA Having Double Standards? Lewis Hamilton Deserves A Pen…Read more

Following the Spanish Grand Prix incident involving George Russell and Max Verstappen, there has been a growing debate about consistency in Formula 1 stewarding. If we are to uphold fairness in the sport, then Russell should face a penalty similar to what Max Verstappen received at the 2024 Mexico Grand Prix.

In Mexico, Verstappen was penalized 20 seconds for forcing Lando Norris off track during an aggressive move into Turn 1. At the time, many argued the penalty was harsh, but the FIA defended it by citing Verstappen’s lack of room given and the potential danger of the maneuver. Fast forward to Spain, and Russell executed a nearly identical move on Verstappen — forcing him wide and off the track in Turn 1, gaining position without giving it back. Yet, no penalty was issued.

When we rewatch the Spanish GP highlights, it’s clear Russell braked late, dived down the inside with minimal control, and left Max no space on the outside. Verstappen had to take evasive action to avoid contact, much like Norris in Mexico. The principle is the same: unsafe rejoining or overtaking without yielding when forcing another car off the circuit. The FIA must maintain the same standard regardless of the driver.

Moreover, this kind of inconsistency damages the credibility of race officiating. Drivers and teams need to understand the limits, and fans deserve transparency. If Verstappen was penalized in Mexico, Russell’s move in Spain should’ve received the same treatment. Penalties should reflect the action, not the name of the driver involved.

Failing to penalize Russell sends the message that stewarding can be selective, which is exactly what Formula 1 should be trying to avoid.
