FIA Investigation Proves Mercedes Breached Regulations to Win and are now D…Read more

The 2026 Formula 1 season opener has taken a dramatic twist after the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) confirmed that a technical investigation found a regulatory breach involving the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team following the Australian Grand Prix. The ruling has led to a significant change in the race results, with Mercedes losing the dominant one-two finish it had originally celebrated in Melbourne.

The race at the Albert Park Circuit initially appeared to be a statement performance from Mercedes at the start of the new campaign. George Russell converted his pole position into victory with an impressive drive, while rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli secured second place in what looked like a dream debut race for the Italian youngster. Their performance suggested that Mercedes had unlocked remarkable pace from its new 2026 challenger.

However, the dominant display quickly raised questions within the paddock. Rival outfits such as Scuderia Ferrari and Red Bull Racing reportedly began to examine Mercedes’ unusually strong straight-line speed during the race. Several competitors suspected the cars were producing more power than expected, particularly when compared with their performance during pre-season testing.

These concerns prompted the FIA to launch a detailed post-race technical inspection. After examining the Mercedes power unit and analyzing engine data, officials determined that the team had used a configuration that did not fully comply with the sport’s technical regulations governing energy deployment and engine performance.

Although the FIA avoided directly accusing Mercedes of deliberate cheating, its official report confirmed that the team had operated outside the permitted limits during the race. According to the governing body, the configuration created a clear performance advantage that could not be overlooked under the rules.

As a result of the breach, both Mercedes drivers were demoted in the final classification of the race. The decision effectively erased Russell’s victory from the official record and reshaped the finishing order of the Australian Grand Prix.

The revised results mean that Charles Leclerc of Ferrari is now officially credited with winning the season-opening race. His teammate, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, has also benefited from the ruling and now stands on the podium after originally finishing just behind Leclerc.

For Russell, the penalty is a painful outcome after what seemed to be one of the strongest performances of his Formula 1 career. During the race he engaged in a fierce early battle with Leclerc before gradually building a gap as the laps progressed. Antonelli had also received widespread praise for his composed and mature drive in his first race for Mercedes, making the demotion particularly disappointing for the young driver.

In response to the FIA’s ruling, Mercedes issued a brief statement acknowledging the decision while maintaining that the breach was not intentional. The Brackley-based team stated that it respects the FIA’s regulatory procedures but believes the issue may involve a complex interpretation of the rules. The team also confirmed that it will review the findings carefully before deciding whether to lodge an appeal.

The controversy has already sparked intense discussion throughout the Formula 1 paddock. Rival teams have largely welcomed the FIA’s firm stance, arguing that strict enforcement of the regulations is crucial in maintaining fair competition under the sport’s new technical rules.

For Ferrari, however, the outcome provides a significant early boost in the championship battle. Leclerc’s promotion to race winner and Hamilton’s improved result give the Italian team valuable momentum heading into the next round of the season.

What began as an exciting start to the 2026 campaign has now turned into one of the most debated race weekends in recent Formula 1 history. The fallout from the investigation could have lasting implications as teams continue to push the limits of performance in the new era of Formula 1.
