FIA Issues New Penalty to Lewis Hamilton After Miami Grand Prix Incident
The FIA has confirmed a post-race penalty for Lewis Hamilton following an investigation into a mid-race incident at the 2025 Miami Grand Prix. The decision comes after scrutiny of his clash with Oscar Piastri, which drew immediate attention during the race.
The incident took place on Lap 27 when Hamilton attempted an overtake on Piastri at Turn 11. Contact was made, forcing the McLaren driver off the racing line and costing him valuable time. While both cars escaped damage, McLaren filed a protest claiming Hamilton’s move was overly aggressive.
Following a detailed review of video footage, telemetry, and team radio, race stewards found Hamilton “predominantly at fault.” He has been penalized with a 5-second time penalty and receives 1 penalty point on his Super Licence.
As a result, Hamilton drops from seventh to ninth place in the final race standings, elevating Oscar Piastri and Pierre Gasly by one position each.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff commented, “We don’t agree with the call, but we respect the stewards’ authority. It was a tough battle, and Lewis was pushing hard.”
Hamilton himself responded calmly, saying, “I saw it as a racing incident, but I accept the decision and we’ll keep pushing.”
This penalty tightens the midfield competition even further, with the next race in Imola shaping up to be a key moment in the season.
