Verstappen hit with penalty after sprint race error; championship battle intensifies heading into Sunday’s race

Max Verstappen’s quest for a fifth consecutive Formula 1 world championship has taken a hit after the FIA handed the Red Bull driver a penalty following a sprint race incident at the Miami Grand Prix. The penalty reshuffles the grid and has added fresh drama to an already intense 2025 title battle.

The Dutchman, who arrived in Miami late after celebrating the birth of his daughter, Lily, was involved in a controversial move during the sprint event on Saturday. According to the FIA’s post-race report, Verstappen was found to have breached racing regulations during a first-lap tussle with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, forcing the Australian wide off the racing line.

After reviewing the incident, race stewards determined Verstappen was at fault and issued him a three-place grid penalty for Sunday’s Grand Prix. As a result, Verstappen drops from P2 to P5 on the starting grid—handing a clear advantage to his McLaren rivals, Piastri and Lando Norris.

FIA Statement:

“Car 1 was deemed to have forced Car 81 off track in an avoidable incident. The stewards have imposed a three-place grid penalty for the Grand Prix as a result.”

This development comes at a critical juncture in the championship. Piastri leads the standings with 99 points, followed by Norris on 89 and Verstappen just behind with 87. The grid penalty not only dents Verstappen’s hopes of a Miami win but could allow McLaren to tighten their grip on both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.

Despite the setback, Verstappen remained composed when speaking to reporters post-sprint. “It’s not ideal, of course,” he said. “We were racing hard, but I respect the decision. We’ll focus on recovering in the main race—there’s still a long way to go in the season.”
