FIA President Issues Official Statement After Yuki Tsunoda S…read more
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has issued an official statement following a wave of racist and abusive messages directed at Japanese Formula 1 driver Yuki Tsunoda. The abuse followed a controversial incident during the Free Practice session at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix weekend, where Tsunoda was impeded by Franco Colapinto on a flying lap.
In his statement, Ben Sulayem strongly condemned the online hate and reaffirmed the FIA’s commitment to eradicating abuse and discrimination in motorsport.
> “Motorsport is about passion, competition, and respect,” said Ben Sulayem. “There is absolutely no place for hate, racism, or online toxicity in our sport. We stand firmly with Yuki and any driver or team member subjected to such treatment.”
Tsunoda, visibly frustrated after the incident on track, later became the target of racist comments in Spanish across various social media platforms. Fans also attacked other drivers, including Jack Doohan, who was not even involved in the situation.
Speaking to the media, Tsunoda addressed the abuse, calling on F1 and the FIA to take stronger action:
> “I understand fans are passionate, but this went too far. It’s not just me — other people were attacked who had nothing to do with it. We need action, not just words.”
Colapinto, who was involved in the on-track moment, also urged fans to “stay respectful and kind,” distancing himself from the hateful conduct.
The FIA reiterated its ongoing initiatives to combat online abuse, including its digital responsibility campaign and increased coordination with platforms to identify and report offensive behavior. The organization also promised to continue working closely with drivers and teams to promote a safer and more inclusive environment across the motorsport community.
