FIA president receives official letter from 20 drivers demanding immediate C…read more

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has been confronted with a major show of unity from drivers in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, after all 20 competitors on the current grid signed and submitted a formal letter demanding significant changes to how the series is governed.

The letter, sent on March 11, calls for a comprehensive review of sporting regulations, race control procedures, and stewarding decisions. It also urges the FIA to commission an independent evaluation of officiating consistency, an issue that drivers believe has increasingly affected the fairness of racing outcomes.

The initiative was led by drivers’ representatives Lucas di Grassi and reigning champion Oliver Rowland, who outlined growing frustration within the paddock. According to the drivers, there is a widening disconnect between officials and competitors, with many feeling their concerns are not being properly acknowledged.

Central to the complaints are repeated on-track incidents and what drivers see as inconsistent or unclear decisions from race stewards. The nature of Formula E racing—tight, strategic, and often unpredictable—has been cited as a key factor that requires a more tailored and consistent officiating approach. Drivers argue that current systems do not fully reflect the realities of the all-electric series.

Reports from motorsport outlet The Race suggest that the situation has escalated beyond routine dissatisfaction. Some drivers, speaking anonymously, claimed they have “little or no professional faith” in certain senior officials, pointing to deeper concerns about trust and leadership within the championship.

In response to the letter, Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) acknowledged the concerns and confirmed it is reviewing the issues raised. A spokesperson emphasized that the governing body remains in regular communication with teams, manufacturers, and drivers, and is committed to maintaining high standards across the series.

Meanwhile, Ben Sulayem is expected to make a rare personal appearance at the next race round in Jarama. His presence is seen as a direct reaction to the drivers’ collective action and could provide an opportunity for face-to-face discussions aimed at easing tensions.

The unified stance from the entire grid is unusual in motorsport and highlights the seriousness of the situation. As the season continues, attention will shift to how the FIA responds and whether meaningful changes will be introduced to restore confidence among drivers and ensure consistency in decision-making.
