Former F1 boss warns Hamilton to CANCEL Ferrari contract following…read more
Former Formula 1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone recently suggested that Lewis Hamilton should consider walking away from the sport entirely rather than moving to Ferrari, a switch that is reportedly set for the 2025 season. This announcement about Hamilton’s Ferrari contract came before the start of the 2024 season, sparking considerable debate about the seven-time world champion’s future in F1.
Hamilton has spent this season driving for Mercedes while knowing his departure is imminent, which has contributed to a somewhat subdued outlook throughout the year. His performances have reflected his frustration with Mercedes’ inconsistent car, compounded by his struggles to outperform teammate George Russell in qualifying sessions. Russell has been more competitive overall this season, which has added to Hamilton’s discontent. Hamilton currently sits behind Russell in the drivers’ championship, a position that has been difficult for the veteran driver, especially after a challenging Brazilian Grand Prix. In Brazil, Hamilton finished 11th in the sprint and 10th in the main race after qualifying 12th and 16th, respectively. Following the race, he alluded to needing a “holiday,” a remark that some interpreted as a hint at a longer break or a reassessment of his upcoming Ferrari deal.
Ecclestone believes Hamilton may be better off ending his career now, questioning whether the move to Ferrari is in Hamilton’s best interest. He raised concerns about the financial and personal sacrifices Hamilton would face if he continued racing, saying Hamilton would “walk away from a lot financially.” Ecclestone speculated that the contract’s bonus clauses may have been designed more for motivation than practical benefits. Ferrari’s chairman, John Elkann, reportedly viewed signing Hamilton as a point of pride, believing he was securing the most celebrated driver in recent F1 history. However, Ecclestone hinted that Elkann’s enthusiasm for the deal might be waning as Hamilton’s recent struggles come to light.
“Lewis should go away and do something else, and do a good job at it,” Ecclestone stated, suggesting that Hamilton could find fulfillment outside F1. The former F1 boss expressed disappointment at the idea of Hamilton “fading” within the sport, given his prior success and status as one of the sport’s most iconic figures. Additionally, Ecclestone referenced Hamilton’s past remarks about the need for the older generation to step back, perhaps implying that Hamilton himself now falls into that category as he nears 40.
Hamilton remains seventh in the drivers’ standings, a position he’s unaccustomed to after years of championship contention. As his Ferrari switch looms, Ecclestone’s comments add another layer to the speculation surrounding Hamilton’s next steps.
