George Russell Raises Disqualification Concern Over Kimi Antonelli’s Car at Imola Grand Prix
Mercedes Formula 1 driver George Russell has sparked concerns over a potential disqualification risk for team-mate Kimi Antonelli after identifying a possible technical issue during Friday practice at the Imola Grand Prix.
The 27-year-old Brit, who has stepped into a leadership role at Mercedes following Lewis Hamilton’s departure, demonstrated commendable teamwork in the opening free practice session by flagging excessive plank wear on Antonelli’s car—a problem that could lead to disqualification if not addressed.
“Lots of bottoming and plank wear from Kimi, exit turn four, entry turn five,” Russell reported over team radio during FP1, suggesting Antonelli’s ride height may be set too low.
The 18-year-old Italian is making his debut Formula 1 race weekend in his home country and is aiming for a career-first podium at the historic Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. With friends and family in attendance, the stakes are high for Antonelli, who has shown impressive consistency early in his rookie season.
Ride height and plank wear are tightly regulated in F1, with the FIA conducting spot checks post-race. Excessive wear to the skid block—commonly referred to as the plank—can result in immediate disqualification, as seen in past cases involving top drivers such as Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
Mercedes is currently second in the constructors’ standings, thanks in part to Russell’s four podium finishes in the opening six races and Antonelli’s steady points-scoring performances.
Russell’s timely feedback could be crucial in avoiding a costly penalty. The team is now expected to make setup adjustments, including raising Antonelli’s ride height for the remainder of the weekend to ensure compliance with FIA regulations and preserve the young driver’s shot at a memorable result on home soil.
The Imola Grand Prix continues throughout the weekend, with qualifying set for Saturday and the main race on Sunday.
