Hamilton Outpaces Leclerc in Ferrari Test as Crash Ends Running Early
Lewis Hamilton has reportedly outperformed his new Ferrari teammate, Charles Leclerc, during their recent testing sessions at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The two drivers participated in their first official test with Ferrari last week, driving the SF-23 under Formula 1’s “Testing of Previous Cars” (TPC) regulations.
The test was a crucial opportunity for Hamilton to familiarize himself with Ferrari machinery ahead of the 2025 season. According to reports, the seven-time world champion posted faster lap times than Leclerc during their runs, showcasing impressive speed in his early days with the Scuderia.
However, the test came to an abrupt halt when Hamilton suffered a crash on the second day of running. While he was unharmed in the incident, the damage to the SF-23 was significant, forcing Ferrari to halt testing for the rest of the day. This meant that Leclerc, who was scheduled for additional track time, was unable to continue his program.
With the car requiring extensive repairs, Ferrari had to adjust their testing schedule. The final day of running was allocated to reserve and junior drivers Antonio Giovinazzi and Dino Beganovic, leaving Leclerc without a chance to match Hamilton’s performance.
Despite the setback, Ferrari will have further opportunities to conduct testing before pre-season officially begins. The team will be keen to ensure both of their lead drivers get ample preparation time ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 season.
