Hamilton reveals biggest dream as champion discusses RETIREMENT after…read more

Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion, has shared one of his most significant aspirations before retiring from the sport: racing in Africa. Despite being 39 years old and among the most senior drivers on the grid, Hamilton has shown no intention of stepping away from F1 anytime soon. In fact, he is set to join Ferrari in 2025, where he will compete alongside Charles Leclerc and aim for an unprecedented eighth world championship, a feat that would solidify his place as the most successful F1 driver in history.

While chasing an eighth title remains a key goal, Hamilton has also expressed a deeper ambition—to see Formula 1 return to Africa, a continent that has been absent from the F1 calendar since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami. Speaking to various media outlets, Hamilton emphasized the significance of this dream. “One of the cool things is that I feel like I might play a small part in these new races,” Hamilton explained. “They asked where you wanted to have a race, and I always said Vegas. A few years later, we had a race in Vegas. I’ve been talking about Africa, and now Rwanda is potentially on the map, which is great.”

Hamilton’s vision for an African Grand Prix aligns with recent developments within F1. Rwanda has emerged as a strong candidate to host the race, with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali reportedly meeting Rwandan representatives in September 2024. Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, will also host the FIA Annual General Assembly and Prize Giving Ceremony in December, further cementing its growing involvement in global motorsport.

Hamilton has been a vocal advocate for F1’s expansion into Africa, drawing from his personal experiences in Rwanda and South Africa. “Rwanda is one of my favorite places I’ve been to, actually,” Hamilton said at the Dutch Grand Prix earlier this year. “I’ve been doing a lot of work in the background on it. I’ve spoken to people in Rwanda, I’ve spoken to people in South Africa. Rwanda is a longer project, but it’s amazing that they’re so keen to be a part of it.”

As Hamilton continues to push for an African Grand Prix, his influence could help make this dream a reality, ensuring he races on African soil before his storied career concludes.
