Lewis Hamilton has experienced a significant snub from his Formula 1 rivals as he prepares to leave Mercedes. The seven-time world champion recently competed in his final race for the Brackley team at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, marking the end of a partnership that delivered six drivers’ championships and eight constructors’ titles. Hamilton will now make the move to Ferrari, hoping to end his illustrious career on a high after struggling in recent seasons with Mercedes.
Hamilton’s 2024 season has been especially challenging. Despite having two unexpected victories that showcased his skill, he was consistently outperformed by his teammate George Russell in both qualifying and races. As a result, Hamilton finished the season in seventh place in the driver standings. This came after a more promising 2023 campaign, where he secured third in the championship despite Mercedes’ performance issues and the dominant presence of Red Bull. However, Hamilton’s form appeared to decline following his decision to join Ferrari, with some underwhelming results and a noticeably downbeat demeanor during race weekends.
This decline in Hamilton’s performance has been reflected in a vote conducted on the official F1 website, where drivers were asked to rank the top 10 performers of the season. Max Verstappen unsurprisingly claimed the top spot, as he did in the team principals’ poll, while Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc both made significant gains, rising two positions from the previous year to secure second and third, respectively. George Russell, despite not having made the top 10 in the previous edition, finished fourth. Oscar Piastri also made a strong impression, moving up three places to take fifth.
However, the most notable change was Hamilton’s ranking. The seven-time champion, who was previously ranked second in 2023, was voted the 10th-best driver of 2024, marking an eight-place drop. This stark fall from grace highlighted the challenges Hamilton faced throughout the season and the shifting perception of his performance among his peers. Notably, Verstappen and Hamilton did not participate in the voting process. The drivers who contributed their votes included notable figures such as Fernando Alonso, Carlos Sainz, and George Russell, among others.
