Horner Labels Hamilton’s Mercedes Relationship ‘Stale’ Ahead of Ferrari Move
Christian Horner has offered a sharp critique of Lewis Hamilton’s situation as the seven-time Formula 1 champion prepares to leave Mercedes and join Ferrari in 2025. Horner, the Red Bull team principal, described Hamilton’s relationship with Mercedes as “stale,” suggesting that the British driver’s switch could bring much-needed revitalization to his career.
Hamilton announced his decision to part ways with Mercedes at the start of the 2024 season after enduring a tough stretch with the team in recent years. Despite his success with Mercedes in the past, the team has struggled to adapt to the regulation changes introduced in 2022, resulting in Hamilton facing the longest winless streak of his F1 career until his victory at Silverstone in 2024.
This win, while a significant achievement, did little to mask the frustrations Hamilton experienced throughout the season. With Mercedes unable to consistently compete with the dominant Red Bull team, 2024 has been a particularly challenging year for Hamilton. His car, the W15, has not performed up to expectations, and Hamilton has openly expressed disappointment with his pace. In a particularly downbeat moment after the Qatar Grand Prix, he admitted he no longer felt as fast as before.
Adding to his struggles, Hamilton has been outpaced by his younger teammate George Russell, who beat him in qualifying on 19 occasions throughout the season. This led to further frustrations for Hamilton, who acknowledged his difficulties in keeping up with both his teammate and the competitive demands of the sport.
As Hamilton looks ahead to his 2025 switch to Ferrari, many are wondering whether the move will reignite his hopes for an eighth world title. Ferrari, often referred to as the biggest name in Formula 1, presents a fresh challenge for Hamilton after spending the majority of his career within the Mercedes framework. Hamilton’s time with Mercedes has spanned nearly his entire career, making the upcoming transition all the more significant.
Christian Horner, in an interview with talkSPORT, weighed in on the situation, suggesting that the move could be exactly what Hamilton needs to rejuvenate his F1 career. “It’s a big move for Lewis. He’s been with the Mercedes family his entire career, so to step out of that into arguably the biggest brand in Formula 1, Ferrari, it’s a great story for Formula 1,” Horner said.
Horner also hinted that the change could help Hamilton rediscover his form after several lackluster seasons. “It could be just the revitalization of Lewis he’s been looking for. He’s looked very flat the last three years, and perhaps that relationship became a little stale,” he added.
For Hamilton, the move to Ferrari represents a fresh start and potentially the final chapter in his quest for an unprecedented eighth world title. At 39 years old, Hamilton remains one of the most decorated drivers in the history of the sport, but the challenges ahead will test whether he can once again compete at the very top.
As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on how Hamilton adapts to life at Ferrari and whether the change will give him the boost he needs to reclaim his place among the sport’s elite.
