In a recent interview, Jos Verstappen expressed frustration with Red Bull Racing, saying the team’s struggles this season have pushed his son, Max Verstappen, to adopt a more aggressive approach on the track. This comment comes after Max received two separate 10-second penalties during the Mexican Grand Prix for incidents involving rival Lando Norris. On lap 10, Max was penalized for forcing Norris off the track, and shortly after, he was also reprimanded for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. Despite the setbacks, Max managed to finish in sixth place, although the penalties allowed Norris to finish second, trimming Verstappen’s championship lead to 47 points with only four races left in the 2024 season.
McLaren has shown strong form in recent races, with their cars proving to be faster than Red Bull’s. With the superior pace of the McLarens, particularly in the hands of Norris, Verstappen’s title defense has become increasingly challenging. Jos has been vocal in his criticism of Red Bull’s performance this season, arguing that Max’s aggressive style is a direct result of having to compensate for the car’s limitations. He believes that Red Bull’s issues with car performance have forced Max to take more risks in his driving, which has, in turn, drawn more scrutiny from race officials.
Jos suggested that the stewards’ actions during the Mexican Grand Prix may reflect a bias, stating that Max will not adjust his driving style simply because “a few stewards present now” are uncomfortable with it. He emphasized that Max is committed to doing everything within his power to retain the championship title, regardless of the penalties he has faced.
According to Jos, Max’s current driving approach is born out of necessity. He defended his son’s conduct, insisting that Red Bull’s lackluster performance has left Max with little choice but to push the boundaries in his quest for another championship. With only four races left in the season, the stakes are high, and Max’s competitive drive remains undeterred despite mounting pressure from both his rivals and officials. Jos’s remarks underscore the tension between Red Bull’s current form and Max’s ambition, as the team faces increasing competition and scrutiny in the final stretch of the 2024 championship.
