Lando Norris Reveals Key Contrast with Oscar Piastri Ahead of Monaco GP: “It’s Just a Needless Worry”
As Formula 1 heads to Monaco, Lando Norris has opened up about the stark difference in approach between himself and McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri particularly in how they’re preparing for the Grand Prix’s strategic challenges.
This weekend’s race features a rare twist: a mandatory two-stop strategy, a first for Monaco, prompting intense planning and discussion within the McLaren camp. After a detailed strategy briefing, Piastri admitted he was still mentally processing the various possibilities. Norris, on the other hand, appeared unfazed.
“Honestly, I hadn’t thought about it much,” Norris told media including RacingNews365. “We’ve only just gone through the initial briefing. The team understands all the details better than I do right now. It’s not something I need to overthink.”
Norris acknowledged the unpredictability of Sunday’s race, saying the unusual rules could open the door for unexpected results.
“It’ll definitely be a tricky race,” he said. “It’s not as simple as stopping twice. There’s potential for surprises, which could be good or bad depending on where you are. If you’re at the front, you want stability. If you’re further back, it’s a great opportunity.”
The British driver made it clear that his current focus is on practice and qualifying, not the race strategy itself.
“I’m not thinking about Sunday yet,” he said. “I’ll worry about that after qualifying. Right now, I just need to focus on the sessions ahead.”
When asked if his laid-back mindset highlighted the difference between himself and Piastri, Norris gave a candid response.
“You can think what you want, but everything changes depending on where you qualify,” he said. “So for me, it’s a needless worry. We’ve discussed the ideal scenarios, but races rarely go perfectly. Gaps open and close, drivers manage tyres differently — there’s no point stressing over it now. He has his approach, and I have mine.”
Norris, currently 13 points behind Piastri in the standings, seems content to let things unfold naturally — reinforcing the cool, collected attitude that sets him apart from his more meticulous teammate.
