Lando Norris has openly admitted to feeling crushed following the Brazilian Grand Prix, where his chances of clinching the 2024 Drivers’ Championship took a serious hit. The McLaren driver, who had been a strong contender this season, now faces an almost insurmountable task to overcome Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in the standings.
Trailing Verstappen by 62 points heading into the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Norris acknowledges that the championship is slipping out of his grasp. With only three races remaining and 86 points left to be earned, the odds are firmly stacked against him. Verstappen, who showcased his dominance with an extraordinary victory at Interlagos — climbing from 17th on the grid to take the win — is poised to secure his fourth consecutive title if he outpaces Norris this weekend.
Reflecting on his performance in Brazil, Norris expressed his frustration and disappointment. Starting from pole position, he had high hopes of cutting into Verstappen’s lead but ultimately finished in sixth place. “Brazil was a defining moment for the championship. The door is almost shut now,” Norris admitted. “I was pretty down for a week after the race because I realised that so much is out of my control. It’s tough when you work so hard, and it feels like it’s slipping away.”
Despite the setback, Norris is not losing sight of the bigger picture. The 24-year-old believes he has proven himself as a genuine championship contender this season. His consistent performances, including multiple podiums and a few victories, have solidified his reputation as one of the most talented drivers on the grid. With McLaren’s resurgence in form this year, Norris is optimistic about the future, particularly for the 2025 season.
Looking ahead, Norris is determined to remain competitive in the final races, starting with the Las Vegas Grand Prix. While the title may be out of reach, he is focused on maximizing his results and building momentum for the next campaign. At the same time, he’s sending a clear message to Verstappen: his rise as a formidable rival is far from over.
As the season nears its conclusion, fans are eagerly watching whether Norris can close the gap in the standings or if Verstappen will cement his dominance once again.
