Late FIA Penalty on Crash Incident Drops Lando Norris on Spanish GP Grid To …read more
In a dramatic twist ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix, Lando Norris has been handed a late penalty by the FIA following a review of a crash incident during qualifying. The decision, announced just hours before the race, will see the McLaren driver demoted on the starting grid — a major blow to his hopes after a strong qualifying performance.
The penalty stems from an incident involving Norris and another driver during Q2, which stewards later determined warranted further review. After analyzing telemetry and on-board footage, the FIA ruled that Norris was “predominantly at fault” for causing an avoidable collision.
As a result, Norris has been hit with a grid drop (number of places yet to be confirmed), pushing him down from his original qualifying position. This reshuffle may also benefit rivals starting just behind him.
McLaren has expressed disappointment with the timing of the decision, citing a lack of clarity during the earlier stages of qualifying. A team spokesperson said they are “reviewing all options,” but a formal appeal seems unlikely given the proximity to lights out.
