Lewis Hamilton Tests 2024 Ferrari F1 Car in Barcelona for Pirelli Tyre Development
In a key off-season event, Lewis Hamilton completed his first extensive test in Ferrari’s 2024 Formula 1 car, the SF-24, at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Having previously tested the 2023 SF-23, this session marked his initial hands-on experience with Ferrari’s latest machine.
The test was part of Pirelli’s development program for new tyre compounds set to debut in 2026. To replicate the expected 20% downforce reduction under future regulations, Ferrari modified the SF-24, allowing Pirelli to gather crucial data.
Hamilton completed 87 laps, setting a fastest time of 1:15.93, marginally quicker than teammate Charles Leclerc, who logged 86 laps. Leclerc’s earlier running in the SF-23 was hampered by poor weather at Fiorano, while Hamilton’s crash in Barcelona earlier in the week also impacted the schedule.
McLaren was also active at the circuit, with Lando Norris conducting a similar Pirelli tyre test in a modified MCL60, completing 159 laps and setting a best time of 1:15.21. Oscar Piastri was slated to take over testing the following day.
These tests highlight the ongoing collaboration between F1 teams and Pirelli in preparation for future rule changes. For Hamilton, it was a crucial step in his transition to Ferrari, offering valuable seat time and insights into the SF-24’s characteristics. Despite initial setbacks, his performance demonstrated strong adaptation and commitment to Ferrari’s development program.
As teams gear up for the upcoming season, these sessions provide critical data to refine car setups, assess tyre performance, and adapt to evolving regulations, ensuring optimal performance on race weekends.
