Lewis Hamilton Tests 2024 Ferrari F1 Car in Barcelona for Pirelli Tyre Development

Lewis Hamilton recently completed his first significant test in Ferrari’s 2024 Formula 1 car, the SF-24, at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The session was part of Pirelli’s tyre testing program for the 2026 season and marked Hamilton’s first extended run in current Ferrari machinery since his move from Mercedes.

Ferrari modified the SF-24 to simulate the anticipated 20% downforce reduction under future regulations, ensuring accurate data collection for Pirelli. Hamilton covered 87 laps during the test, setting a fastest time of 1:15.93—over a tenth quicker than his new teammate, Charles Leclerc. Leclerc later completed 86 laps but had limited running earlier in the week at Fiorano due to poor weather, which restricted him to just 14 laps in last year’s SF-23. Additionally, Hamilton’s earlier crash in Barcelona slightly disrupted the test schedule.

Alongside Ferrari, McLaren also participated in Pirelli’s tyre tests at the same venue. Lando Norris completed 159 laps in a modified MCL60 without sponsorship branding, setting a fastest time of 1:15.21. His teammate, Oscar Piastri, was scheduled to continue testing the following day.

These test sessions are crucial for Pirelli as they develop tyres suited to the upcoming regulation changes. Ferrari’s decision to use the SF-24 allowed them to gather insights on how reduced downforce affects car performance, benefiting both their own preparations and Pirelli’s development process.

For Hamilton, the test provided essential track time to familiarize himself with Ferrari’s machinery. His smooth adaptation, despite an earlier incident, highlights his commitment to integrating with the team. His presence in these development tests signals a proactive approach to understanding Ferrari’s car dynamics ahead of the new season.

Overall, these sessions play a vital role in Formula 1’s evolving landscape, offering teams valuable data for car development, tyre performance, and strategic planning. Hamilton’s involvement in the SF-24 test reflects not only his dedication to Ferrari’s success but also the collaborative nature of F1 teams working alongside Pirelli to shape the future of the sport.
