Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton met with the UK Prime Minister this week to discuss the launch of a new national education alliance. However, the meeting also saw Hamilton openly criticising recent government decisions that he believes undermine efforts to promote equality in education.
The alliance, supported by Hamilton’s Mission 44 foundation, aims to address systemic inequalities faced by students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds. While the partnership marks a positive step, Hamilton voiced concern over recent cuts to educational support services and policies that, in his view, neglect the needs of marginalized youth.
During the meeting at Downing Street, Hamilton said, “While I welcome the formation of this alliance, I cannot ignore the contradictions in government policy. You can’t promote inclusion while cutting the resources that make inclusive education possible.”
Hamilton pointed to reduced funding for mental health support in schools and the narrowing of curriculum options in underserved communities as examples of decisions that send the wrong message. He urged the government to match its words with real investment and long-term commitments.
The Prime Minister acknowledged Hamilton’s concerns and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to improving outcomes for all students, but did not commit to reversing current policies.
Despite the tensions, the new education alliance will move forward, with plans to launch pilot programs focusing on mentorship, teacher development, and inclusive learning environments. Hamilton’s vocal stance is expected to keep pressure on the government as the initiative unfolds.
