Seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton is pushing for immediate reforms in the UK education system, following alarming findings from a study conducted by his charitable foundation, Mission 44. Beyond his achievements on the racetrack, Hamilton has been an active advocate for social justice, especially through Mission 44, which focuses on empowering young people from underrepresented backgrounds to succeed in education and motorsport careers.
The recent report published by Mission 44 highlights growing concerns around inclusivity in UK schools and colleges. The study uncovered that 17% of students do not feel safe or welcome in their learning environments. Even more troubling, 41% of respondents felt their schools or colleges failed to acknowledge or support their concerns and wellbeing. These numbers were significantly worse for students with disabilities, special educational needs (SEN), or those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
In light of these findings, Hamilton used his social media platforms to share the report and publicly called on the UK government to take immediate steps. “I’m proud to stand alongside Mission 44 and over 25 organisations calling for the government to take urgent action to build a more inclusive education system,” he stated.
Mission 44, supported by various youth and education organisations, has formally urged the government to act swiftly. In their official statement, the foundation declared: “Lewis Hamilton and Mission 44 are proud to be leading a sector-wide call for urgent action on inclusive education, alongside over 25 signatories from across the education and youth sectors. Together, we are calling for urgent Government action to build a more inclusive education system that supports every young person to thrive.”
To address these issues, Mission 44 has proposed a set of detailed recommendations aimed at driving meaningful change. Firstly, they are calling for the creation of a national inclusion framework. This would offer schools standardized guidance on fostering safe, welcoming, and inclusive environments.
Additionally, they propose implementing an annual nationwide survey to monitor students’ experiences and well-being. The foundation also recommends launching mentorship programs specifically designed to support students at risk of exclusion, providing them with tailored guidance and resources.
Lastly, Mission 44 is advocating for targeted funding to diversify and strengthen the educational workforce. This includes recruiting professionals who reflect the communities they serve, ensuring that every student receives support from staff who understand their unique backgrounds and challenges.
Hamilton’s appeal places a renewed spotlight on the urgent need for equality and reform in education, echoing his continued dedication to social change beyond the F1 grid.
