Hamilton’s Ferrari Crash in Testing a Positive Sign, Says Analyst
Lewis Hamilton’s early testing crash with Ferrari may have raised concerns among fans, but Formula 1 analyst Peter Windsor argues it’s actually a reason for optimism. According to Windsor, Hamilton’s incident at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya demonstrates how comfortable he already feels with his new team.
As part of Ferrari’s preparations for the 2025 Formula 1 season, Hamilton took part in a private three-day test in Barcelona, driving the SF-23—Ferrari’s 2023 Formula 1 car. However, during the second day’s morning session, Hamilton lost control at the high-speed final corner and crashed, causing significant damage to the suspension and aerodynamic components. The accident also disrupted Ferrari’s plans, preventing Charles Leclerc from completing his scheduled afternoon session.
Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari, which resulted in Carlos Sainz’s departure, has been met with mixed reactions. Former Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto, Alpine executive Flavio Briatore, and former F1 team boss Eddie Jordan have all expressed doubts about the decision. Despite this, Windsor sees Hamilton’s crash as a positive sign rather than a setback.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Windsor explained that while the incident might seem like a major issue at first glance, it actually indicates that Hamilton is already pushing the car to its limits—something that suggests a strong sense of confidence. He believes Hamilton’s quick adaptation to Ferrari should be encouraging for his supporters.
“On the surface, it might look like Hamilton’s first real test with Ferrari didn’t go well, especially since it ended in a crash,” Windsor said. “But I actually see it as a hugely positive test for him, and I think Hamilton fans should be excited by how things played out.”
Windsor emphasized that Hamilton’s crash wasn’t caused by external factors like track conditions but rather by the seven-time World Champion feeling so comfortable with the car that he was willing to push it aggressively. He pointed out that the SF-23 wasn’t one of Ferrari’s best cars, yet Hamilton still appeared more at ease in it than he had been in his last couple of years with Mercedes.
“This shows how good he feels in the team and in the car,” Windsor added. “It’s probably the best he’s felt in an F1 car since early 2022.”
Despite the crash, Windsor believes Hamilton’s quick adaptation bodes well for his future with Ferrari, hinting that he may be a strong contender once the 2025 season begins.
