Lewis Hamilton Struggles as Jenson Button Highlights Ferrari Challenges

Lewis Hamilton is reportedly feeling the pressure as he continues to trail behind his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, according to former F1 world champion Jenson Button. The seven-time world champion joined Ferrari this season with high hopes, expecting to make an immediate impact. However, the reality has been far from his expectations, with early performances revealing a difficult adaptation period to life at the Scuderia.

After six race weekends in the 2025 Formula One season, Leclerc holds a 12-point advantage over Hamilton in the Drivers’ Championship standings. While Hamilton did enjoy a brief moment of success by winning the sprint race in Shanghai, he has yet to secure a podium finish in a traditional Grand Prix for Ferrari. This dry spell has raised questions about his current form and compatibility with his new car.

The recent Miami Grand Prix further underlined Hamilton’s ongoing challenges. During qualifying, he was unable to progress beyond Q2 and was ultimately left to start 12th on the grid. Leclerc, though not exceptionally fast either, managed to qualify eighth and finished the race in seventh place. Hamilton crossed the line in eighth, once again finishing behind his teammate. These results have only fueled speculation that Hamilton is struggling to find his rhythm in the Ferrari machinery.

Jenson Button, who spent three seasons racing alongside Hamilton at McLaren from 2010 to 2012, weighed in on the situation during Sky Sports’ coverage of the Miami Grand Prix. Button acknowledged that the current gap in performance between the two Ferrari drivers is likely affecting Hamilton psychologically. “I think it is starting to hurt him a little bit, constantly being slower than his teammate,” Button said. “That’s not how Lewis Hamilton is built. He’s a winner.”

Hamilton is renowned for his competitive spirit and exceptional driving pedigree, having amassed 103 Grand Prix victories and seven world titles over his illustrious career. His move to Ferrari was seen as both a fresh challenge and a legacy-defining opportunity. Many fans and analysts hoped that his experience would help bring Ferrari back to championship-winning form. However, the early stages of the season suggest that integrating into the team and adapting to the car’s nuances is proving more difficult than expected.

While it is still relatively early in the season, the pressure is mounting for Hamilton to deliver the kind of performances that match his legacy. Ferrari fans had hoped the Hamilton-Leclerc pairing would spark a resurgence, but for now, the Monegasque driver appears to be leading the charge.

Hamilton has historically bounced back from difficult spells, and the paddock knows better than to count him out. But as things stand, his struggles are visible and, as Button points out, likely hurting a driver who has always thrived on being at the front. The coming races will be crucial in determining whether Hamilton can turn things around and begin challenging not only his teammate but also the front-runners in the championship.
