Lewis Hamilton “Absolutely Furious” After Qualifying Disappointment at Italian Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton expressed his deep frustration following a disappointing qualifying session for the Italian Grand Prix, where he could only manage a sixth-place finish. The seven-time world champion, who had been aiming for a front-row start, was left seething after a series of small mistakes cost him crucial time on the Monza circuit. Meanwhile, his Mercedes teammate George Russell secured a more promising third place on the grid, leaving Hamilton with a tough task on race day.
Hamilton’s anger was palpable as he spoke to Sky Sports F1 after the session. The 39-year-old Brit had been running close to Russell throughout qualifying and had hoped to at least secure a spot in the top three. However, errors in Turn One and the final corner proved costly, leaving Hamilton over a tenth of a second off the pace he needed to challenge for pole position.
“I am furious, absolutely furious,” Hamilton admitted. “I could have been on pole, at least on the front row. I just didn’t do the job. I lost a tenth and a half into Turn One, and then a tenth in the last corner. No one to blame but myself.”
Hamilton, who has struggled with qualifying in recent seasons, acknowledged that this aspect of his racing has become a persistent challenge. “Qualifying has been my weakness for a minute now and I can’t figure it out. I will keep trying. I will be kicking myself for the next couple of hours but I need to move forward,” he said.
Despite his frustration, Hamilton remained optimistic about his chances in the race, noting that the Mercedes W15 felt strong throughout the weekend. “We have a good race car, the team have done an amazing job. The car felt better and the team deserve better,” he said, hinting at the possibility of a strong comeback during the race.
Hamilton’s future with Mercedes has been the subject of much speculation recently, with the announcement that 17-year-old Kimi Antonelli will be stepping into the Silver Arrows team when Hamilton eventually makes his anticipated move to Ferrari. The veteran driver acknowledged the team’s hard work and suggested that the Italian Grand Prix could still offer redemption, possibly in the form of a strong performance from Antonelli in the future.
In contrast to Hamilton’s frustration, George Russell was more upbeat about his own performance. The young Brit secured third place on the grid, a result he described as better than expected given the tough conditions during Q1 and Q2.
“It was great,” Russell explained. “Ending up P3, a little bit better than I expected because it was a really tough session. Fortunately, we saved it until the end. Not too far behind the McLarens. They’re so fast at the moment. We’re working so hard to catch them up, but I’m super happy with third.”
Russell also emphasized the importance of a strong start and race strategy at Monza, a circuit where overtaking can be challenging despite the long straights. With two McLarens ahead of him, Russell acknowledged the challenge but remained hopeful that Mercedes could deliver a strong result in front of the passionate Italian crowd.
As the Italian Grand Prix approaches, all eyes will be on Hamilton to see if he can turn his frustration into a determined charge through the field. With the Mercedes car showing competitive pace, there is still every chance that the Briton could leave Monza with a strong result, despite the setback in qualifying. Meanwhile, Russell’s solid starting position puts him in a prime spot to challenge for a podium finish, making for an exciting race ahead.
