In recent days, it was confirmed that all 10 Formula 1 teams, along with the FIA and Formula 1 management, have officially agreed to a new formal Diversity and Inclusion charter. This agreement follows the work of The Hamilton Commission, a project launched by Hamilton in 2021 to address the lack of diversity in motorsport, particularly at the highest levels.
The Commission, which was established with the support of the Royal Academy of Engineering, was tasked with investigating why there are so few people from underrepresented backgrounds in Formula 1. Its findings identified several barriers that have historically prevented individuals from diverse communities from reaching the top of the sport. The Commission’s recommendations have now been taken into account, leading to the creation of the new charter.
Hamilton has long been an advocate for increased diversity in motorsport, having often spoken about the challenges he faced as a Black driver in a sport that has been predominantly white. He has been vocal in pushing for change, and this charter represents a significant milestone in his efforts to create a more inclusive and accessible Formula 1.
Following the announcement of the new charter, Hamilton expressed his gratitude for the progress made and the sport’s commitment to diversity. Reflecting on the work of The Hamilton Commission, he stated, “I launched the Hamilton Commission in 2021 to figure out why there were so few people who looked like me in my sport and why it’s been that way my whole life.”
He went on to explain that, with the help of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Commission had begun to answer those questions and outlined the barriers that have prevented individuals from diverse backgrounds from breaking into the sport. “This charter is a result of the findings from that report,” Hamilton said.
The seven-time world champion emphasized the potential impact of the charter, stating that it could have a “massive” effect on the future of the sport. He also thanked Formula 1, the FIA, and all the teams for recognizing the importance of diversity and committing to this new initiative. “For all the teams, Formula 1, and the FIA to recognize the need for diversity is an incredible sign of progress,” he added.
