Hamilton Tops Timesheets in Second Practice at Italian Grand Prix, Norris and Sainz Follow Closely
In an intense second practice session for the Italian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap time, marking an impressive start to the weekend for Mercedes. The seven-time world champion clocked a 1:20.738, narrowly edging out McLaren’s Lando Norris by just three-thousandths of a second. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz rounded out the top three, indicating a competitive showing from the upgraded Ferrari at their home circuit.
Hamilton’s performance in FP2 was a notable improvement from the first session, where Mercedes struggled to match the pace set by Red Bull. With the Italian Grand Prix being a crucial event in the second half of the season, Hamilton’s time on top of the leaderboard suggests that Mercedes has found a good balance in their car, particularly on a track known for its high-speed demands.
George Russell, Hamilton’s teammate, had a slightly different experience. Russell took to the track in a car that had been involved in an earlier incident with Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The young Italian, who is a rising star in the Mercedes junior program, had a crash earlier in the day during a test session. Despite the setback, Russell managed to put in a respectable performance, though his focus seemed to be on gathering data rather than setting a competitive time.
Lando Norris continued his strong form, finishing just behind Hamilton in the standings. McLaren has shown significant progress throughout the season, and Norris’s lap time in FP2 is a testament to the team’s upward trajectory. With only three-thousandths of a second separating him from Hamilton, Norris is clearly in the mix for a strong qualifying position, which could translate into a podium fight come Sunday.
Norris’s teammate, Oscar Piastri, also delivered a solid performance, finishing the session in fourth place. The young Australian has been steadily improving, and his consistent pace is becoming a crucial asset for McLaren as they battle for position in the Constructors’ Championship.
Carlos Sainz’s third-place finish brought hope to the Ferrari camp. The Italian outfit has been working hard to maximize their performance at Monza, a track that holds special significance for the team. The upgrades brought to the SF-23 seem to be paying off, as Sainz was able to mix it up with the top drivers. Charles Leclerc, the other Ferrari driver, finished fifth, just a tenth and a half behind Hamilton, indicating that Ferrari could be competitive in qualifying.
In a surprising twist, reigning world champion Max Verstappen and his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez struggled in FP2, finishing down in 14th and 15th, respectively. After topping the timesheets in FP1, Verstappen was unable to replicate that form in the second session, failing to complete a proper qualifying simulation. It remains to be seen whether this was due to a strategic choice by Red Bull or if the team is facing setup issues.
The session was briefly halted when Haas driver Kevin Magnussen made contact with the barriers, bringing out the red flags. Magnussen was unhurt, but the incident added to a challenging day for the American team, who have been struggling to find competitive pace this season.
As teams prepare for the final practice and qualifying sessions, the battle for pole position is shaping up to be a fierce one. With Hamilton leading the way and the likes of Norris, Sainz, and Verstappen close behind, the Italian Grand Prix promises to deliver thrilling action at every turn.
