Tough Start for Hamilton and Ferrari Amid Drama in FP1

The opening practice session at the Canadian Grand Prix proved to be a challenging one for several top drivers, including Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, as unpredictable incidents and surprising performances unfolded in Montreal.

Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, endured a frustrating start to the weekend. The British driver only managed to secure fifth place in the FP1 standings, far from where he’d hoped to be. He wasn’t alone in his struggles—Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc also had a difficult session and could do no better than tenth before disaster struck for the team.

Ferrari’s troubles began early in the session when Leclerc’s teammate crashed into the barriers just 15 minutes in, forcing him out of the session and raising concerns for the Italian team heading into the rest of the weekend. Though Hamilton also made an error, spinning at the tight Turn 10 hairpin, he managed to recover without significant damage and continued on with his session. His car remained intact, but the incident highlighted the tricky conditions that caught many drivers off guard.

At the front of the pack, it was Max Verstappen who set the pace, topping the FP1 timesheet and reminding the paddock of his dominance. The Dutch driver looked composed and in control throughout the session. However, the real surprise came from the Williams team, with Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz

unexpectedly securing places in the top three. Their impressive pace shocked many and added an unexpected twist to the first day of action in Canada.

Elsewhere, McLaren struggled to find their rhythm. Oscar Piastri, who currently leads the championship standings, could only manage 14th place, a significant underperformance compared to his recent form. His teammate Lando Norris fared slightly better, but still finished down in seventh, suggesting the British outfit has work to do before qualifying and the race.

Overall, the session was marked by unpredictable performances, uncharacteristic mistakes, and the ever-present danger of the Montreal street circuit. With several top teams and drivers finding themselves out of position or in trouble, the rest of the weekend promises to be an exciting battle to recover and adapt. Ferrari, in particular, will be under pressure to regroup quickly after a disastrous FP1 that left them with more questions than answers.

As the teams prepare for FP2 and beyond, fans can expect more drama and tighter competition, especially with surprise performers like Williams shaking up the usual order and championship hopefuls like Hamilton and Piastri looking to bounce back.
