Hamilton Battles Through Chaos as Russell Extends Perfect Sprint Record in Shanghai

Seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton delivered a determined performance in the sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix, fighting through late drama and a safety car period to secure a valuable podium finish. However, it was George Russell who ultimately stole the spotlight by maintaining his flawless record in the 2026 season with another impressive victory.

The sprint race at the Shanghai International Circuit proved to be anything but straightforward, with intense wheel-to-wheel battles, penalties, and a late safety car shaking up the order before the checkered flag.

Hamilton’s Lightning Start Shakes Up the Race

Starting from fourth on the grid, Hamilton wasted no time making his presence felt. The Ferrari driver launched off the line brilliantly and surged through the opening corners to snatch the race lead within the first few turns.

His aggressive move immediately set the tone for an exciting opening phase, with Russell quickly responding. The two rivals engaged in a thrilling duel during the first quarter of the race, exchanging the lead multiple times in a fierce but clean battle.

While the fight unfolded ahead, Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc remained close behind, watching the duel carefully and waiting for any opportunity to capitalize on a mistake.

Eventually, Russell began to find his rhythm and managed to create a small but important gap at the front. As the Mercedes driver pulled away slightly, Hamilton suddenly found himself under increasing pressure from Leclerc behind.

Ferrari Teammates Nearly Collide in Intense Fight

The battle between the Ferrari drivers soon became one of the most dramatic moments of the race. Leclerc closed the gap quickly and launched an attack on Hamilton, leading to a tense wheel-to-wheel contest between the two teammates.

At one point, the pair came extremely close to making contact as they raced side by side through several corners. The tension was evident as both drivers fought hard but managed to avoid a costly collision.

Their duel allowed others behind to close the gap, including Mercedes rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli.

Antonelli’s Charge Ends in Frustration

Antonelli eventually joined the leading battle and made an impressive on-track pass on Hamilton, briefly moving ahead and appearing ready to challenge the front runners.

However, the young Italian’s strong drive was soon undone by a penalty handed down by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). The stewards issued Antonelli a ten-second penalty for a first-lap incident involving Isack Hadjar.

The clash stemmed from a chaotic start in which Antonelli had already lost several positions. After beginning the race from second place on the grid, a poor launch dropped him down the order to seventh by the time the field reached the first corner.

The contact with Hadjar ultimately proved costly, wiping out the progress he had made during the race.

Late Safety Car Turns Race Upside Down

Just as the sprint race appeared to be settling down, late drama arrived when Nico Hülkenberg was forced to retire only a few laps from the finish. His stranded car triggered a safety car, bunching the entire field back together.

The unexpected neutralization sparked a flurry of activity in the pit lane. Most teams opted to take advantage of the opportunity to switch to fresh tyres in preparation for the final sprint to the finish.

Ferrari chose to double-stack both cars in the pits, bringing in Hamilton and Leclerc together. While the move ensured both drivers received new tyres quickly, it also cost Hamilton valuable track position.

When the pit cycle ended, Hamilton found himself behind reigning world champion Lando Norris.

Hamilton Strikes Back After Restart

Despite the setback, Hamilton quickly responded once racing resumed. The British driver wasted little time attacking Norris after the restart, using his fresher tyres and experience to execute a decisive overtake.

The move allowed him to reclaim his podium position and deliver an important result for Ferrari.

The performance also sent a clear message that Ferrari remain the closest challengers to Mercedes in the early stages of the season.

Red Bull Endures Difficult Weekend

While Mercedes and Ferrari battled at the front, the weekend proved deeply disappointing for Red Bull Racing.

Four-time world champion Max Verstappen struggled throughout the sprint and could only manage ninth place, leaving him outside the points. His teammate Hadjar endured an even tougher race, finishing down in 15th position.

The result means Red Bull left the sprint race without scoring a single point, a worrying sign for a team accustomed to fighting for victories.

For Russell and Mercedes, however, the story was very different — another win, another perfect result, and a powerful statement in the early stages of the 2026 Formula 1 season. 🏁🏎️
