Lewis Hamilton’s Father, Anthony, Set for Shock FIA Role in Young Driver Development

In a surprising turn of events, Anthony Hamilton, father of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, is poised to take on an official role with the FIA, motorsport’s global governing body. According to The Times, Anthony will help spearhead the organization’s upcoming Young Driver Development Pathway.

Hamilton has been quietly working with FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem for the past 18 months, contributing to the formation of the new initiative aimed at nurturing emerging talent in motorsport. His efforts have impressed Ben Sulayem enough to earn him a permanent role within the organization, with the program expected to be officially launched next month.

Anthony Hamilton’s involvement comes with considerable experience, having guided his son Lewis from karting to F1 stardom. He is reportedly driven by a desire to protect young drivers and support grassroots motorsport development. His compassionate act of consoling Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar after a crash at the Australian Grand Prix earlier this year further underlined his dedication to the wellbeing of upcoming racers.

The appointment arrives during a turbulent period in the FIA. Ben Sulayem’s presidency has been marred by multiple high-profile resignations, including that of deputy president for sport, Robert Reid, who openly criticized his leadership. With FIA elections approaching later this year, Ben Sulayem is expected to run for re-election, while rally legend Carlos Sainz Sr. is also weighing a potential challenge.

Some observers view Anthony Hamilton’s new role as a strategic move by Ben Sulayem to demonstrate he has support from within the racing community—particularly given the strained relationship between the president and Lewis Hamilton. In 2024, Lewis publicly condemned comments made by Ben Sulayem as racially insensitive, adding tension to an already complicated dynamic.

Nevertheless, Anthony Hamilton is no longer involved in managing Lewis’s career, eliminating any conflict of interest concerns as he takes on his new responsibilities within the FIA.
