Lewis Hamilton’s Struggles with Ferrari: From Dream Move to…read
Lewis Hamilton’s much-anticipated move to Ferrari has quickly turned from a dream into a frustrating reality. After ending a remarkable 12-year career with Mercedes, where he won six of his seven Formula 1 world championships, the British driver joined Ferrari with high hopes. His transfer was one of the biggest stories of the off-season, and Hamilton himself admitted he was thrilled to finally drive for the legendary Italian team, calling it a lifelong ambition.
However, only a few races into the 2025 season, things have not gone according to plan. A string of underwhelming performances has left Hamilton well off the championship pace. The most recent example came during the Miami Grand Prix, where he finished in a disappointing eighth place despite starting 12th on the grid. While he gained positions during the race, it wasn’t enough to satisfy either the fans or pundits, particularly given Ferrari’s high expectations and rich legacy in the sport.
Sky Sport Italy pundit Leo Turrini offered a scathing review of Hamilton’s Miami performance, rating it a modest 6 out of 10. “Starts twelfth, finishes eighth. The rest is a frustration that he doesn’t even hide anymore,” Turrini commented. He went on to quip, “Honeymoon never started with the Lady in Red,” referencing the famous Ferrari red livery and implying that Hamilton’s relationship with his new team has soured quickly.
The pressure seemed to boil over during the Miami race itself, when Hamilton found himself embroiled in a tense radio exchange with his race engineer, Riccardo Adami. During the closing laps, Hamilton, who was on fresher and faster tyres, requested that the team let him overtake his teammate Charles Leclerc to chase down Kimi Antonelli, who was running in sixth place. While Ferrari eventually agreed, the delay meant Hamilton spent several laps stuck behind Leclerc in turbulent air, which compromised his pace and chances of overtaking Antonelli.
Hamilton did not hold back in expressing his frustration. After Adami told him, “Understood, we swapped the cars,” Hamilton snapped back sarcastically with, “Have a tea break while you’re at it!” The tension didn’t stop there. When asked to allow Leclerc to retake the position later in the race, Hamilton questioned the decision and responded with, “Do you want me to let him through as well?” in reference to Carlos Sainz, who was behind them.
Although Hamilton attempted to downplay the radio spat during post-race interviews, his irritation was evident. His current standing in the 2025 championship is a far cry from what he and his fans had envisioned. After six races, Hamilton has only managed to finish in the top five once and currently lies seventh in the drivers’ standings. Leclerc, his Ferrari teammate, sits two positions ahead, adding further pressure on the British veteran.
Adding to his woes, his successor at Mercedes, 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli, has impressed in his rookie season. Antonelli finished ahead of Hamilton in Miami and has consistently shown strong pace. Meanwhile, George Russell, Hamilton’s former teammate at Mercedes, has already secured four podium finishes this year, making Hamilton’s transition appear even more difficult in comparison.
The early stages of the 2025 season have made it clear that Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, once viewed as a fairy tale conclusion to his career, is instead turning into a tough and emotional challenge. Whether he and the Scuderia can turn things around in the coming races remains to be seen, but for now, the “honeymoon” is over, and the reality is proving to be far from romantic.
