Verstappen Camp Criticizes FIA Over ‘Unfair’ Spanish Grand Prix Rule Change

Jos Verstappen, father of four-time world champion Max Verstappen, has slammed the FIA over a recent regulation change he believes unfairly impacts the 2025 Formula 1 season, just days before the Spanish Grand Prix.

The FIA has introduced a new rule targeting flexible front wings, which many suspect have played a role in McLaren’s impressive performance so far this year. The change will take effect starting with the Spanish GP, a move Jos Verstappen believes has come too late.

“They want to make the season more exciting and prevent one driver from dominating like in previous years,” Jos told De Limburger, referencing Max’s commanding 2023 season with Red Bull. “But there should be a level playing field. Teams have been allowed to benefit from these flexible front wings for too long. It’s just not fair.”

McLaren currently leads the Constructors’ Championship by a staggering 176 points over Red Bull, though Max Verstappen remains firmly in the Drivers’ title fight — just 25 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri after eight races.

The new regulation is seen by some, including Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur, as a possible turning point for the 2025 season. While Vasseur doubts it will dramatically shift the title race, he believes it could bring more teams into the mix on individual race weekends.

The timing of the rule change is particularly interesting, as Max Verstappen may be in a strong position to capitalize on it. With the championship still wide open, the next few races could see a major shake-up in the running order if the new regulation levels the playing field as expected.

All eyes now turn to Barcelona, where the impact of the FIA’s decision will be felt on track for the first time.
