Max Verstappen REPLACED at Abu Dhabi GP as after Red Bull…read more
Red Bull Racing has confirmed that Isack Hadjar, a rising star from their junior driver program, will replace Max Verstappen during the first practice session (FP1) at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This session, marking the last race weekend of the 2024 Formula One season, allows Red Bull to comply with Formula One’s rule requiring teams to field a young driver in at least one FP1 session during the year. With Abu Dhabi serving as the final opportunity to meet this mandate, Verstappen will step aside to give Hadjar the chance to showcase his skills.
Hadjar previously participated in an FP1 session earlier this season, taking over Sergio Perez’s car during the British Grand Prix. However, Verstappen had not yet fulfilled the requirement, making this decision timely as the championship has already been decided. The young driver’s upcoming session in Abu Dhabi will allow him to gain additional experience at the top level of motorsport while providing Red Bull with valuable insights into his capabilities.
Verstappen recently clinched his fourth consecutive World Drivers’ Championship at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. A calculated fifth-place finish was enough to secure the title, capping another dominant season for the 27-year-old Dutchman. While Verstappen’s reign appeared briefly under threat mid-season from McLaren’s Lando Norris, who delivered impressive performances and reduced the points gap, Verstappen regained control in the latter part of the year. Heading into the season’s final two races, Verstappen holds an insurmountable 63-point lead, making the title race a foregone conclusion.
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, held at the Yas Marina Circuit on December 8, offers a dual opportunity for Red Bull: to comply with the rookie FP1 regulation and to evaluate Hadjar’s potential as part of their long-term driver development strategy. Known for his promise and strong performances in Red Bull’s junior program, Hadjar could be a key figure in the team’s future plans.
For Verstappen, this brief absence from FP1 allows him to focus on closing out the season on a high note. With another championship secured, the final races are less about results and more about testing strategies, gathering data for 2025, and fulfilling regulatory requirements. Meanwhile, Red Bull will also aim to maintain their edge in the Constructors’ Championship as they prepare for next season.
Ultimately, Hadjar’s FP1 session reflects Red Bull’s commitment to fostering young talent while celebrating their unparalleled success in 2024, solidifying their position as the dominant force in
Formula One.
