Max Verstappen Faces Potential F1 Ban Ahead of 2025 Season

Reigning Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has addressed the possibility of a race ban as he heads into the 2025 season. The Dutch driver, who secured his fourth F1 title in 2024, finds himself at risk of suspension due to the accumulation of penalty points on his super license.

Verstappen’s 2024 championship win came after a hard-fought battle with McLaren’s Lando Norris, who consistently challenged him throughout the season. McLaren had developed the fastest car on the grid, but Norris struggled to fully capitalize on the advantage. A series of individual errors meant that the Briton fell short, allowing Verstappen to use his experience and tenacity to clinch his fourth title.

However, Verstappen’s aggressive driving style and willingness to push boundaries led to several incidents during his rivalry with Norris, particularly towards the end of the season. These clashes drew the attention of the FIA, with Verstappen receiving a series of penalties. The most notable incident occurred at the Mexican Grand Prix, where the 27-year-old was handed a 20-second penalty for repeatedly forcing Norris off the track during their battle for position.

As a result of these incidents, Verstappen has accumulated penalty points on his super license. Under the FIA’s penalty system, drivers receive points for infractions, with the severity of the offense determining how many points are assigned. If a driver accumulates 12 penalty points within a certain time frame, they are automatically banned from competing in one race, and their points tally resets to zero.

Currently, Verstappen holds eight penalty points on his license. However, two of these points are not scheduled to be removed until after the Austrian Grand Prix, meaning the Red Bull star is walking a tightrope as he starts the 2025 campaign. Should he receive four more penalty points before the Austrian race, Verstappen will face an automatic one-race ban.

Despite this looming threat, Verstappen has made it clear that he has no intention of changing his driving style. Speaking in an interview with Swiss outlet Blick, the Dutchman addressed the situation: “We could discuss some of the penalties and points here for hours. Like [Fernando] Alonso, I already have eight penalty points. But I’m not going to change my driving style because of that.”

Verstappen also took a lighthearted approach to the situation during a Red Bull promotional video, jokingly remarking, “Let’s make it 40+ next year,” when shown a broadcast graphic of his 20-second penalty from Mexico. This attitude reflects his determination to remain aggressive on the track, regardless of the consequences.

In the event that Verstappen does receive a ban, Red Bull will be allowed to substitute him with another driver for the race. This scenario played out last year in Baku, when Haas driver Kevin Magnussen was suspended and replaced by Ollie Bearman. For Red Bull, the likely replacement for Verstappen would be Yuki Tsunoda, who is part of the Red Bull driver program. Tsunoda was controversially overlooked for a full-time seat in favor of Verstappen’s current teammate, Sergio Perez, despite strong performances in his junior career.

While Verstappen’s dominance over the past four seasons has been undisputed, a potential race ban in 2025 could have significant implications for the championship. Though he secured the 2024 title with two races remaining, the competition is expected to be fiercer this season. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc emerged as a major threat after the summer break, scoring the most points in the second half of the season. Missing a race could hand a crucial advantage to Leclerc or other contenders, complicating Verstappen’s pursuit of a fifth world title.

As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on Verstappen to see whether he can maintain his championship-winning form while avoiding further penalties that could derail his campaign.
