Max Verstappen takes legal action after Norris brutal…read more
Max Verstappen has initiated legal action by trademarking his iconic phrase “simply lovely” following a lighthearted comment made by fellow Formula 1 driver Lando Norris earlier in the season. Norris and Verstappen are currently in a thrilling battle for the 2024 championship, with Norris’ impressive performances in his McLaren allowing him to close the points gap to Verstappen to just 52 points. With only three races left, the competition is heating up, not just between the drivers but also between their respective teams in the fight for the constructors’ championship.
While Verstappen and Norris have built a fierce rivalry on the track, they remain close friends off it. This season has been particularly memorable for Norris, as he secured his first three career Formula 1 victories. One of these wins was especially significant as it occurred at Verstappen’s home race, the Dutch Grand Prix, where Norris dominated, finishing over 20 seconds ahead of the reigning world champion. After crossing the finish line, Norris humorously quoted Verstappen’s well-known victory phrase, “simply lovely,” over the team radio. Though this was interpreted by some as a possible “dig” at Verstappen, Norris clarified that he was just trying to have some fun and meant no offense.
Despite the playful nature of the comment, Verstappen has taken steps to protect his catchphrase by trademarking it for potential commercial use. While Norris himself faces no legal threat from the Dutchman, Verstappen has sought to ensure that others cannot use the phrase without his permission. The trademark application has reportedly received no opposition and is expected to be finalized by November.
It remains unclear exactly how Verstappen plans to use the trademark, but given his existing success in the merchandise space, it’s likely to be incorporated into his brand. Verstappen already sells a wide range of products through his official website, Verstappen.com, and the “simply lovely” phrase could be a natural addition to this line. Additionally, Verstappen owns Team Redline, a successful sim racing team, which further expands his commercial interests.
This move is just another sign of Verstappen’s growing influence both on and off the track, as the three-time world champion continues to make his mark not only in racing but also in the business world.
