McLaren CEO Zak Brown Confirms Formula E Exit Amid Triple Crown Ambitions
In a dramatic turn of events, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has announced the team’s departure from the Formula E championship, marking a major shift in its motorsport direction. The decision is tied to McLaren’s bold new objective: to win motorsport’s coveted Triple Crown Monaco Grand Prix, Indianapolis 500, and 24 Hours of Le Mans within a single season, a feat never before achieved.
The move, which stunned fans and insiders alike, coincides with growing rumors of a potential shake-up at Red Bull Racing, although McLaren has not confirmed any direct connection.
McLaren to Exit Formula E, Focus on Endurance Glory
After joining Formula E in 2022 under the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team, McLaren found early success, including a race victory and six podiums. Rising star Taylor Barnard currently sits fourth in the 2024–25 Drivers’ Standings, with the team holding third place overall making their withdrawal all the more surprising.
However, Zak Brown says the team’s focus must now shift toward long-term goals, namely a full return to the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2027, with the aim of conquering Le Mans once again. McLaren famously won the race on debut in 1995.
“We’ve proven ourselves in every major series,” Brown said. “Now, we want to do what no one has — win the Triple Crown in a single calendar year. That’s the next great challenge.”
Formula E Exit Underway Buyer Sought
McLaren emphasized its respect for Formula E as a platform for innovation and sustainability, but confirmed it will exit the series after the 2024–25 season. Talks are in progress to transfer ownership of the Formula E outfit, with the goal of preserving the team’s legacy and ensuring continuity under new leadership.
The exit leaves a notable void in Formula E, which must now address grid stability ahead of the 2026–27 season.
Red Bull Rumors Swirl
Brown’s announcement has also fueled speculation of internal changes at Red Bull Racing, although no official comment has been made. The timing of McLaren’s announcement has only added to the intrigue surrounding potential leadership shifts across the paddock.
McLaren’s Triple Crown Mission Begins
With a competitive lineup including Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in Formula 1 and Pato O’Ward continuing to shine in IndyCar, McLaren is well-positioned across the motorsport landscape. Their planned WEC entry is the final piece in a puzzle that, if completed, would mark the greatest single-season achievement in racing history.
“Winning all three in one year would be unprecedented,” Brown said. “And McLaren is ready to make history — again.
