McLaren to Leave Formula E as Zak Brown Targets One-Season Triple Crown Triumph

McLaren Racing has confirmed it will exit the Formula E championship at the close of the 2024–25 season, as CEO Zak Brown pivots the team’s focus toward an unprecedented motorsport challenge: capturing the prestigious Triple Crown  the Monaco Grand Prix, Indianapolis 500, and 24 Hours of Le Mans  all within a single year.

The move forms part of McLaren’s broader strategic evolution, with the team set to join the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) grid in 2027. The ultimate ambition: achieve something no team has ever done before by winning all three Triple Crown events in one season.

“Thirty years ago, we shocked the world by winning Le Mans on our debut with a car that wasn’t even designed for racing,” Brown recalled. “Now, we’re setting our sights even higher  on completing the Triple Crown in a single season. It’s bold, but we believe we’re ready.”

McLaren stands alone as the only constructor to have won all three iconic races, though never in the same year. With momentum building in Formula 1  where the team leads the 2024 Constructors’ Standings  and a competitive IndyCar program, McLaren is laying the foundation for a historic run.

To reallocate resources toward this mission, McLaren will depart Formula E after three seasons in the all-electric series. Competing as the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team since 2022, they’ve notched one win and six podiums. Rising star Taylor Barnard currently sits fourth in the drivers’ standings, with the team holding third place overall.

Despite its relatively short tenure, McLaren’s Formula E journey was marked by progress and promise. Still, Brown emphasized the importance of aligning the team’s priorities with long-term ambitions. “Formula E has been a valuable platform, but this is the right time for us to commit fully to our next big goal  especially as we gear up for WEC.”

McLaren is currently seeking a buyer for its Formula E team to ensure the outfit continues to thrive under new ownership. Their departure presents a fresh challenge for Formula E as it works to stabilize its grid ahead of the 2026–27 season.

As McLaren shifts focus to endurance racing, it brings a formidable driver lineup featuring F1 stars Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, along with IndyCar front-runner Pato O’Ward. With top-tier talent across series and a bold vision for the future, McLaren is determined to etch its name into the annals of motorsport history once again.

Whether they can pull off the Triple Crown sweep in a single season remains to be seen  but with clear intent and a legacy of defying the odds, McLaren is all-in.
