McLaren driver announcement causes stunning backlash

McLaren recently sparked controversy on social media after an announcement involving one of their star Formula 1 drivers, Oscar Piastri.

Following a triumphant 2024 season where McLaren clinched their first constructors’ championship since 1998, the team has been keeping fans entertained during the F1 winter break.

Lando Norris played a crucial role in securing the championship with a decisive victory at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

His teammate, Oscar Piastri, finished 10th after an early collision with drivers’ champion Max Verstappen.

Despite this setback, Piastri had an impressive second season, achieving two grand prix victories and contributing significantly to McLaren’s success.

As part of their offseason content, McLaren shared a playful post showcasing Piastri’s imaginative idea for a new grand prix.

Using an image generator, Piastri created a mock poster for an event he dubbed the “Moon Dog Grand Prix.”

The design featured quirky elements such as dogs in fairy costumes on the moon and broomsticks equipped with lasers.

Piastri humorously called for the fictitious race to become a reality.

However, the lighthearted announcement was met with mixed reactions online.

Many fans criticized McLaren for promoting AI-generated art instead of supporting traditional artists.

One Instagram commenter expressed disappointment, saying it was “sad” to see the team use AI over commissioning real artists.

Another remarked that while they admired McLaren, they believed the team was indirectly supporting “art theft” by endorsing AI.

The backlash extended to McLaren’s follow-up post showcasing Piastri’s creation, where further criticism poured in.

One fan on Instagram stated that even after watching the video of Piastri’s involvement, they still found the concept unacceptable.

Over on X (formerly Twitter), another fan questioned McLaren’s allocation of resources, suggesting the championship-winning team could have afforded to hire a professional artist.

The incident highlights the growing debate over the use of AI in creative industries.

While Piastri’s playful contribution added a lighthearted touch to McLaren’s offseason content, the response from fans underscores the sensitivity surrounding the balance between technology and traditional artistry.
