McLaren Issues Statement Following Tragic Fire at Bicester Motion Headquarters
McLaren’s Formula E team has responded with a statement of sorrow following a fatal fire that broke out on Thursday evening at Bicester Motion, the site that houses its Formula E operations.
The incident occurred at the former RAF base, now home to McLaren’s FE headquarters as well as several automotive engineering and classic car restoration companies. The fire, visible from miles away, prompted an emergency response from 10 fire crews.
Tragically, Oxfordshire County Council confirmed the deaths of two firefighters, with two others seriously injured and currently receiving hospital treatment. A close associate of the facility also lost their life in the incident.
Chief Fire Officer Rob MacDougall expressed the gravity of the situation: “It is with a very heavy heart that we today report the loss of two of our firefighters. Families have been informed and are being supported.”
The identities of the fallen firefighters have yet to be released. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer offered his condolences, stating on X (formerly Twitter): “Devastating news. My thoughts are with their families and friends. The bravery of our firefighters is astounding. Hoping those in hospital make a full and swift recovery.”
McLaren, whose Formula E team is currently competing in a double-header in Tokyo, released the following statement:
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and injuries caused by the fire at Bicester Motion last night.
We are incredibly grateful to the Emergency Services for their courage and dedication. Our thoughts are with the families affected during this difficult time.”
While the fire is now under control, the site has been closed through the weekend. McLaren has implemented remote working plans for its staff during the temporary shutdown.
