Pato O’Ward Dismisses Cadillac F1 Rumours: ‘Just Having Fun, No Contact Made’
McLaren and IndyCar driver Pato O’Ward has addressed swirling rumors linking him to a potential seat with the upcoming Cadillac Formula 1 team, confirming that there has been no contact or formal approach from the American outfit.
Cadillac made a splash at the Miami Grand Prix last weekend, unveiling its team branding and logo ahead of its planned entry to Formula 1 in 2026. As anticipation builds over who will drive for the new team, O’Ward’s name had emerged in speculation — something the Mexican driver has now made clear was all in jest.
Speaking to F1 photographer Kym Illman, O’Ward said, “Everyone kept saying Cadillac! You and Checo. So I thought, why not have a little fun and stir the pot a bit. But honestly, there’s been no contact. None at all.”
Despite shutting down the rumors, O’Ward did reflect on how meaningful a fully Mexican driver lineup would be for the country.
“It would be incredible to have two full-time Mexican drivers in Formula 1 it would be historic,” he said. “The whole country would go crazy. But whether it happens or not, who knows.”
While O’Ward has ruled himself out, Sergio Perez remains a leading candidate for a Cadillac seat, particularly after team executive Mario Andretti confirmed the team’s interest earlier this year. Reports suggest two other F1 teams are also eyeing Perez, whose future beyond this season remains uncertain.
Mick Schumacher has also emerged as a potential option, having attended Cadillac’s team reveal in Miami. The German driver, aiming for an F1 comeback, has received public support from Sebastian Vettel, who has openly backed Schumacher for one of the coveted seats.
As Cadillac prepares for its debut, the competition for a spot on the 2026 grid continues — but Pato O’Ward has firmly ruled himself out of the race.
