Mercedes driver ‘safety net’ for Hamilton replacement emerges

A potential safety net for Mercedes has emerged regarding their driver lineup for 2025, with Valtteri Bottas being suggested as a possible replacement for Kimi Antonelli if the young driver doesn’t perform. Antonelli, just 18 years old, has been promoted to a full-time Formula 1 role after Lewis Hamilton’s unexpected move to Ferrari, leaving a vacancy at Mercedes. This move has raised some concerns about the new pairing of Antonelli and George Russell for the upcoming season.

Mercedes initially considered various options for Hamilton’s replacement, with team principal Toto Wolff even eyeing Red Bull’s Max Verstappen at one point. However, the team ultimately decided to give Antonelli a chance, hoping his potential would shine through. Mercedes is looking for a fresh start as they aim to challenge for the world championship once again, and the pairing of Russell and Antonelli was seen as a bold decision.

Despite this, there are whispers of a backup plan involving Bottas, who was with Mercedes from 2017 to 2021, securing 10 Grand Prix victories during his tenure and helping the team win five consecutive Constructors’ Championships. Bottas has continued racing in F1, driving for Alfa Romeo in 2024, and now there is speculation that Mercedes might be keeping him as a “safety net” in case Antonelli doesn’t meet expectations.

Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya spoke on the situation, noting that Antonelli’s promotion has placed him in a high-pressure environment at one of the sport’s top teams. Montoya emphasized the challenge of being labeled as the next Max Verstappen while being paired with a teammate like Russell, who is already performing at an elite level. This pressure could become overwhelming if Antonelli doesn’t deliver on the promises that Mercedes has placed in him. Montoya’s comments highlight the difficulty of living up to such high expectations, especially in a team with such a competitive environment.

Bottas, with his extensive experience and solid track record, would be a logical and safe choice for Mercedes should they need a replacement for Antonelli. Bottas has proven his worth in F1 and could be a short-term solution if the need arises. His experience with Mercedes in their peak years, as well as his adaptability, could provide the team with much-needed stability.

As the 2025 season approaches, Mercedes’ driver pairing will be under intense scrutiny, with Antonelli having a lot to prove. Bottas stands by as a potential backup, a reassuring option for Mercedes if things don’t go according to plan with their promising young driver.
