While Hamilton’s exit might be beneficial for both him and Mercedes, as the German team focuses on the future, the 2026 season presents a unique challenge. With George Russell and rookie Kimi Antonelli both set to drive for Mercedes in 2025, the team faces a tricky situation, as both drivers’ contracts will expire at the end of the 2025 season.
The 2026 campaign is pivotal for Formula 1, with major regulation changes that could reshape the competitive landscape. Mercedes, already eager to recover from several years of underperformance, risks entering the season without a clear driver lineup, which could be problematic for their long-term strategy.
Russell, who is expected to step into a leadership role at Mercedes in 2025, has already demonstrated his capabilities by outpacing Hamilton in 2024. Should he maintain strong performances in 2025, it is likely that rival teams will take notice, especially with Red Bull team principal Christian Horner already signaling interest in Russell for the 2026 season. Additionally, with the introduction of Cadillac to the grid, Russell’s future could hold many possibilities, including a move away from Mercedes. However, if the team continues to improve and remains competitive in 2025 and 2026, Russell may be inclined to stay and renew his contract with the team.
The performance of Antonelli, however, could influence Russell’s decision. Mercedes has shown great faith in the 18-year-old, promoting him to the team early and providing him with an opportunity to learn in 2025. If Antonelli impresses and begins to challenge Russell for the top spot within the team, it could create tension. Just as Max Verstappen did at Red Bull, Antonelli could push Russell to reconsider his position at Mercedes.
Alternatively, if Antonelli struggles, his potential departure after just one season would reflect poorly on Mercedes. Yet, it is more likely that Antonelli will find a balance, neither dominating nor underperforming in his rookie year. The partnership between Russell and Antonelli could resemble the stability seen between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri at McLaren. With both drivers likely to continue in 2026, Mercedes may opt to retain the lineup. However, the situation could take another turn if Max Verstappen becomes available, prompting speculation of a potential switch, further complicating Mercedes’ future plans.
