New Footage of Verstappen-Russell Crash Sheds Light on Controversial Penalty Decision

Newly released footage from the Spanish Grand Prix has provided fresh insight into the clash between Max Verstappen and George Russell, raising new questions about the penalty that was handed to the Red Bull driver.

The incident unfolded on lap 24, as Verstappen made a bold move on the inside of Russell heading into Turn 1. The two cars collided, forcing Russell wide and causing minor damage to his Mercedes. The stewards quickly blamed Verstappen for the contact, issuing him a five-second time penalty—a decision that sparked immediate backlash from Red Bull.

However, the latest footage, which includes new onboard angles and telemetry, paints a more complex picture. It appears Russell may have turned in slightly earlier than expected, limiting Verstappen’s space. The data also shows Verstappen braking within reasonable limits and holding a steady line, prompting some to argue the penalty may have been harsh.

Opinions remain divided across the F1 community. While some now view the collision as a racing incident, others continue to back the stewards’ original call. Former world champion Jenson Button offered his perspective:

“With this new footage, it’s clear Max wasn’t overly aggressive. George may not have seen him coming. For me, that’s a typical racing incident.”

Mercedes, however, maintains that the stewards made the right decision. Team boss Toto Wolff insisted the new footage doesn’t alter the facts:

“Nothing has changed. George gave it everything, and we support the decision made by the officials.”

Although Red Bull has not announced plans to appeal, team principal Christian Horner voiced his frustration, calling the penalty “inconsistent” and pointing to similar past incidents that went unpunished.

With the title race heating up and both drivers still in contention, the controversial clash adds further intensity to the Verstappen–Russell rivalry. All eyes will now turn to the next round in Austria, where the tension is sure to continue.
