Celtic and Rangers Could Sign… on… Read More.

Celtic and Rangers are reportedly in a potential battle to sign Scotland international Liam Cooper on a free transfer, as per the Glasgow Times.

The 32-year-old defender became a free agent after being released by Leeds United at the end of last season and has not yet committed to a new club, despite engaging in talks with Blackburn earlier in the summer.

Cooper’s availability has piqued the interest of both Glasgow giants, as they look to bolster their defensive options with a seasoned player.

Rangers, in particular, are in the midst of a significant squad overhaul under the guidance of manager Philippe Clement.

With vice-captain Connor Goldson departing the club to join Aris Limassol in Cyprus, the need for experienced reinforcements has become more pressing.

Youngster Clinton Nsiala has been brought in to replace Goldson, while Leon Balogun, Ben Davies, and John Souttar remain as the other central defensive options.

Cooper, with his extensive experience at the highest level, could be a valuable addition to Rangers’ backline.

Celtic, meanwhile, are also considering defensive reinforcements.

Reports suggest that the club is open to offers for three of their current defenders this summer, and the future of Stephen Welsh is uncertain as they evaluate their squad.

Brendan Rodgers, who previously managed Leicester City, is well-acquainted with Cooper’s qualities, having faced him directly during his time in the Premier League.

Cooper’s leadership and defensive capabilities have been recognized by his former teammate Luke Ayling, who referred to him as a “big player.”

A move to either Celtic or Rangers would offer Cooper the chance to return to his homeland and potentially compete in European football, making the transfer an attractive proposition.

Beyond the pursuit of Cooper, Celtic and Rangers are also reportedly in competition for other targets. Both clubs have expressed interest in Manchester United midfielder Hannibal Mejbri.

Rangers are leaning towards securing Mejbri on a loan deal, while Manchester United would prefer to sell him outright, as he is in the final year of his contract.

Additionally, Celtic are looking to hijack a move for Hearts captain and striker Lawrence Shankland, a player also of interest to Rangers.

Shankland, who is in the final year of his contract with Hearts, has attracted attention due to his impressive performances. Hearts are reportedly holding out for a fee exceeding £3 million, making negotiations potentially challenging.

Celtic’s interest in Shankland has intensified after their pursuit of Adam Idah from Norwich stalled due to the latter’s high asking price.

Liam Cooper’s free-agent status has drawn the attention of both Celtic and Rangers, who see him as a valuable defensive reinforcement.

At the same time, both clubs are also vying for the signatures of Hannibal Mejbri and Lawrence Shankland, further intensifying the rivalry between the two Scottish giants as they seek to strengthen their squads ahead of the new season.
