Celtic make enquiry to Ajax for Dutch international defender, club open to… Read More πŸ‘‡

Celtic have reportedly expressed interest in Ajax’s Dutch international defender Owen Wijndal as they search for a new left-back during the final stages of the transfer window. Manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to bring in competition for current first-choice left-back Greg Taylor, with the team needing depth in that position. At the moment, the only backup option is the inexperienced Matthew Anderson, as Alexandro Bernabei is currently on loan in Brazil.

Securing a reliable left-back is a top priority for Celtic, and while the club has been linked to various players, such as Hugo Bueno and Owen Beck, no significant progress has been made in those pursuits. Now, the Scottish champions have turned their attention to the Dutch Eredivisie, looking at Ajax’s Owen Wijndal as a potential solution.

Sky Sports has reported that Celtic, along with Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, have made initial inquiries about Wijndal. Ajax is reportedly open to offers for the 24-year-old defender, who spent the last season on loan at Belgian club Royal Antwerp.

Wijndal’s contract with Ajax runs until 2027, so any potential move could involve a loan-to-buy agreement, especially from Celtic’s perspective. This development represents a promising step in addressing a crucial need for the team.

Owen Wijndal began his professional career with AZ Alkmaar, where he made a significant impact with 143 appearances. His standout performances during the 2021/22 season, which included providing 12 assists, caught the attention of Ajax. The Dutch giants signed him in a deal worth Β£8.5 million, and he went on to make 32 appearances for Ajax before being loaned to Royal Antwerp.

During his time with Antwerp, Wijndal featured prominently, making 40 appearances, including six starts in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League. Notably, he played a crucial role in Antwerp’s 3-2 victory over Barcelona on the final matchday of the group stage.

Wijndal’s performances at AZ Alkmaar also earned him recognition on the international stage. He won 11 caps for the Netherlands in 2020 and 2021, further establishing his reputation as a talented left-back.

Given Wijndal’s experience and strong profile, he would likely be brought in to compete directly with Greg Taylor for a starting spot at Celtic. This potential signing would be an important addition to the squad, particularly as the team prepares for the challenges of the upcoming season, both domestically and in European competitions.

With just a fortnight remaining in the transfer window, Celtic’s interest in Wijndal is a storyline worth following closely. If the Bhoys can secure the Dutch defender, it would address a key area of need and provide Rodgers with the depth necessary to compete on multiple fronts. Whether a deal can be struck remains to be seen, but Celtic’s pursuit of Wijndal demonstrates their commitment to strengthening their squad in the final days of the transfer window.
