Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen Face a ‘Humbling’ Defeat on the Padel Court
Former Red Bull teammates Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen were recently reunited, not on the racetrack but on the padel court. However, despite their impressive achievements in Formula 1, the two drivers found themselves outmatched by a much younger opponent.
Ricciardo and Verstappen, who were teammates at Red Bull from 2016 to 2018, have remained friends even after Ricciardo made the unexpected decision to leave for Renault. Despite a few challenging moments during their final season together, their relationship has stood the test of time. However, their reunion on the padel court did not go as smoothly as some might expect, given their success in motorsport.
The pair took on a 13-year-old opponent, only to suffer a surprising defeat. Ricciardo shared the experience on his Instagram story, posting a picture of himself and Verstappen alongside their young conqueror. “We got humbled yesterday,” Ricciardo wrote, revealing that they lost in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-1. Despite their combined Formula 1 prowess, the duo was no match for the teenager on this occasion. Ricciardo humorously added, “Back to the drawing board,” acknowledging the unexpected loss.
Both drivers have made their mark in Formula 1, with Verstappen currently on track to become a four-time World Champion by the end of the 2024 season. Ricciardo, meanwhile, has enjoyed success with eight career victories. While their competitive paths diverged after Ricciardo’s departure from Red Bull, the two drivers have always maintained mutual respect. Their bond was formed during their time as teammates, although their relationship was occasionally strained by the natural competitive tension that comes with racing for the same team.
Their reunion on the padel court, however, was a far cry from the high-stakes battles they shared on the Formula 1 grid. Despite the loss, it’s clear the pair enjoyed the friendly match, with Ricciardo’s lighthearted reaction demonstrating the camaraderie between the two drivers.
While the padel defeat was a fun diversion, the spotlight remains on Ricciardo’s recent exit from Formula 1. The 2024 Singapore Grand Prix marked Ricciardo’s final race in the sport, though the official announcement of his departure came several days after the event. Despite this, it was later revealed that Ricciardo had known his fate during the Singapore race weekend. As the race ended, Verstappen took the opportunity to pay tribute to his former teammate and friend.
“He’s a great guy, honestly,” Verstappen said, reflecting on his time racing alongside Ricciardo. “We always had a great relationship. We had a sporting rivalry in the team, but he’ll be remembered as a great driver, and also as a great person.” Verstappen’s comments highlighted the respect and affection the two drivers share, despite their fierce competition during their Red Bull years.
Verstappen also predicted that in the future, once both drivers have left the sport, they would reminisce about their shared experiences. “In a few years’ time, when I won’t be here anymore, we’ll sit back and look back at all those years together, and we’ll have a beer together,” he added, suggesting that their friendship will endure beyond their racing careers.
As Ricciardo steps away from the sport, he has been replaced by Liam Lawson at VCARB. Lawson, who has been linked with a potential future role at Red Bull, may eventually step up to partner Verstappen in 2025. This change marks the end of Ricciardo’s time in Formula 1, but his legacy and the respect he commands from his peers, especially from Verstappen, remain intact.
While Ricciardo’s F1 journey has concluded, his reunion with Verstappen on the padel court is a reminder of the enduring friendships and bonds formed throughout his career. Despite their “humbling” defeat, the duo’s playful rivalry off the track shows that their connection extends far beyond the world of racing.
