Leeds United find themselves in a situation eerily similar to a year ago as they prepare for their second league game of the season. Last season, under the leadership of Daniel Farke, Leeds managed only a draw in their opening game before heading to the West Midlands in a troubled state. Farke was forced to field a weakened squad with just eight players on the bench, including three goalkeepers, as two key attackers refused to play. Despite the adversity, the team showed resilience, though they ultimately lost due to a late penalty. Fast forward to this season, and the circumstances feel much the same as they face a trip to the Black Country.
This time, however, there are no players on strike, but the situation is hardly better. The looming departure of Georginio Rutter has cast a long shadow over the club, compounded by a poor week in which Leeds conceded six goals at home. The optimism built during pre-season, where Leeds secured five wins and five clean sheets, has been shattered by a series of disappointing results, including a freak draw and a midweek collapse. Adding to the frustration is the lack of progress in the transfer market, leaving fans and players alike desperate for a morale-boosting win to halt the downward spiral.
Farke himself suggested that the uncertainty surrounding Rutter’s future affected the players’ performances in their midweek game. Now, as they face another tough challenge, the team must rally together and show they can compete without one of their key players. There can be no room for distraction or self-pity; the season is already underway, and points are needed now.
One of the biggest challenges for Farke is finding a replacement for Rutter in the starting lineup. The most likely candidate is Joel Piroe, whom Farke has relied on frequently over the past year, despite his struggles to make a significant impact from the position. Other options include Brenden Aaronson, who could bring more creativity to the attack, or Joe Rothwell, who might be a safer choice for an away game where defensive solidity is crucial.
Farke may also consider switching to a back three, a formation he has experimented with during pre-season. Given the shortage of attacking options and the abundance of center-backs, this could be a viable strategy. In this setup, Jayden Bogle and Junior Firpo could operate as wing-backs, with Max Wober joining the defense. Wilfried Gnonto and Daniel James could then play closer to Mateo Joseph, offering more width in attack.
However, Wober’s participation in today’s game is uncertain due to a calf injury flagged by Farke in his pre-match press conference. Even if fit, Wober may not start, as his recent performances have not been convincing enough to displace Pascal Struijk in the starting lineup.
Leeds United are in a precarious position as they head into today’s game. With Rutter’s departure imminent and key players underperforming, Farke must find a way to inspire his squad and secure a vital win to restore confidence and keep their promotion hopes alive.
