Max Verstappen secured pole position for the 2024 US Grand Prix Sprint Race with an impressive lap, setting himself up for his fourth sprint win of the season. Verstappen, who bounced back from early struggles, recorded a lap time of 1:32.833, placing him at the front of the grid for Saturday’s race at the Circuit of the Americas.
Behind Verstappen is Mercedes’ George Russell, who came within just 0.012 seconds of stealing pole. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will start from third, 0.226 seconds off Verstappen’s time, while McLaren’s Lando Norris will line up in fourth. Norris, who is Verstappen’s main title rival this season, will need to get past both Leclerc and Russell if he wants to mount a serious challenge for the race win.
Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz will start from fifth, narrowly behind his teammate Leclerc, while Haas delivered a strong performance with both of their drivers making it into the top 10. Nico Hulkenberg secured sixth place, outpacing seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who will start from seventh in his Mercedes. Hulkenberg’s teammate Kevin Magnussen starts just behind Hamilton in eighth, giving Haas a significant advantage in their battle with VCARB in the Constructors’ Championship.
VCARB’s Yuki Tsunoda qualified in ninth, continuing his consistent performances this season, while rookie Franco Colapinto delivered a standout result for Williams, qualifying 10th in his first season.
Further down the grid, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez had a difficult session, exiting early and only managing to qualify 11th. He will be joined by Alpine’s Pierre Gasly in 12th and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll in 13th. Fernando Alonso will start 14th for Aston Martin after a similarly challenging qualifying session.
Oscar Piastri suffered a major setback for McLaren, having his lap time deleted for exceeding track limits at Turn 19 during SQ1. As a result, Piastri will start the Sprint Race from 16th, dealing a significant blow to McLaren’s hopes for the weekend. Meanwhile, Williams’ Alex Albon and the Sauber drivers, Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu, will start from the back of the grid.
The Sprint Race in Austin is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. local time on Saturday, October 19, 2024. The race times are set for 8 p.m. CET, 7 p.m. BST, 2 p.m. EDT, and 11 a.m. PDT. Fans can expect an intense battle at the front, as Verstappen looks to extend his sprint race dominance.
