F1 Announces Calendar Changes: Spa-Francorchamps to Rotate
Formula 1 has revealed a significant update to its race calendar, impacting the iconic Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. The announcement follows the record-breaking 2024 season, which featured 24 races from March’s Bahrain Grand Prix to December’s finale in Abu Dhabi.
The ever-expanding calendar has faced criticism from drivers and team personnel, including Max Verstappen, Toto Wolff, and Helmut Marko, who raised concerns about the strain caused by the extended season. In response, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali confirmed that while no additional races will be added, some events will be rotated to make room for new venues.
As part of this strategy, Spa-Francorchamps will remain on the calendar under a multi-year extension. The Belgian Grand Prix will feature in the 2026, 2027, 2029, and 2031 seasons but will not appear in 2028 or 2030. The replacements for those years remain unconfirmed.
Domenicali emphasized the importance of retaining Spa, a circuit deeply embedded in F1’s history. “The Belgian Grand Prix was part of our inaugural Championship in 1950, and as we celebrate 75 years, it’s fitting to announce this extension,” he said. “Spa-Francorchamps is universally praised by drivers and fans as one of the finest racetracks in the world. Over the years, it has hosted countless iconic moments in Formula 1.”
He also acknowledged recent upgrades to the circuit, which have enhanced both the venue and the fan experience. Domenicali expressed gratitude to the event’s promoter and the Walloon Government for their dedication and support in securing the future of F1 in Belgium.
The decision reflects F1’s broader goal of balancing tradition with innovation. While historic circuits like Spa remain integral, the sport is also keen to expand its global footprint. This approach ensures a mix of established and emerging venues on the calendar.
